Introduction |
|
Religion is among the most powerful,
profound and enduring aspects of life. MA Islamic Studies is concerned with the
ideas through which religion is communicated: how it developed, what it means, whether
it is true, and how it may be reformulated. Study of Islam demands a wide range
of knowledge, considerable insight, and care in interpretation, whether you are
a student or a teacher. The department of Islamic Studies at UOS offers you the
opportunity to acquire knowledge, methods, skills, and capabilities necessary to
understand and evaluate ideas of Islam. Department of Islamic Studies has a long
and distinguished history spanning a period of over 16 years, instituted in the
year of 1990 under Government College Sargodha. The Department was affiliated with
the University of Punjab at that time. After establishment of University of Sargodha
in November 2002, the department planned for future with a renewed vigour and zeal;
the results produced were still more encouraging. As a part of UOS, the Department
has planned to launch a 4-year BA (Hons) program. Achieving the hallmark of pure
academic and research atmosphere department has launched MPhil Program in January
2008. The department is also catering the needs of all the university teaching departments
by providing assistance in the teaching of Islamic studies compulsory at undergraduate
and intermediate levels of study programs |

Teaching |
|
Teaching is by lectures, seminars,
tutorials, and for the dissertation, one-to-one supervision. Present teacher student
ratio is 1:7, enrollment consists of 59% females and 41% male students. The aim
of the department is to stimulate your curiosity and provide you with essential
information by means of lectures in the first instance, so as to establish a solid
grounding in the core of the subject. There is progressive emphasis on independent
study, so that in the final year teaching focuses on seminar work and student presentations.

Career Opportunity |
|
Islamic Studies leads to a wide range
of career openings. It naturally equips students who wish to go on to study for
the service of the society, although minority students do this. The majority goes
to managerial or administrative positions in government or public sector, or else
in the professions such as teaching. Recent graduates have found employment in publishing,
journalism, the civil service and social services. As a graduate of UOS you will
develop skills of oral and written communication, of understanding and conceptual
analysis, of critical analysis and personal insight, and of both collaborative work
and independent study. Above all, you will be able to understand the importance
of Islamic history, appreciate traditions outside your own, and make disciplined
judgements. |
